Winter Cover Care

A pool cover is one of the most important investments you can make to maintain the longevity and cleanliness of your above ground or inground pool. Properly caring for your pool cover during the off-season can prevent damage, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure that it remains in good condition for years to come. In this blog, we’ll explore essential tips to help you protect your pool cover throughout the year.

Above Ground Winter Cover Care

During Season

  1. Smooth the Pool Edges: Make sure there are no sharp objects, edges, or protrusions on the outer edge of the pool that could tear the cover. Place padding over any rough spots if necessary.
  2. Avoid Excess Chemical Exposure: Make sure your pool water is properly balanced and avoid placing your pool cover on the pool directly after using chemicals, as this can degrade the material of your cover when in contact.
  3. Install a Pool Pillow: Place an air pillow in the center of the pool under the cover. The pillow helps create an air pocket under the pool cover, which can reduce stress on the cover and the pool walls caused by ice formation. This can help prevent damage from expanding ice and helps prevent water from accumulating on top of the cover, reducing wear and tear from weight.
  4. Secure the Cover Properly: Ensure the cover is tightly secured with included cable & ratchet, cover seal wrap, and/or cover clips to avoid flapping or shifting in the wind, which can cause tearing. After the cover is secure and in position, add a little water to the top to make sure it is held down.
  5. Watch Water Accumulation: If you experience heavy rain before freezing, remove some of the excess water with a cover pump.
  6. Clear Heavy Snow Loads: Use a broom or soft tool to carefully remove heavy snow from the cover to avoid putting stress on the material.
  7. Inspect the Cover for Damage: Before storage and periodically during use, inspect the cover for any small holes or tears. Patch them with a repair kit to prevent further damage.

Removal & Storage

  1. Use a Cover Pump: Invest in a pool cover pump to remove water that collects on top of the cover during winter. Standing water can weaken the material over time.
  2. Wash the Cover: After removing it at the end of winter, clean the cover thoroughly with water and a mild soap to remove dirt, debris, and any chemicals.
  3. Dry Completely: Ensure the cover is completely dry before folding and storing it to prevent mold and mildew.
  4. Store the Cover Properly: Fold the cover evenly and store it in a dry, cool place. Avoid areas with extreme heat or direct sunlight to prevent degradation. Storing the cover in a breathable storage bag will help protect it from dust and rodents.

Inground Winter Cover Care

During Season

  1. Reduce Falling Debris: Trim branches from trees and bushes around your pool to minimize the risk of debris, twigs, or falling branches tearing the cover.
  2. Protect from Sharp Edges: If your pool area has sharp edges or rough surfaces (like pool coping), place padding or other protective materials over these areas before installing the cover to prevent tears.
  3. Balance Water Chemistry: Balance the pool’s water chemistry. Over-chlorinated or highly acidic water can degrade the cover's material over time if it comes into contact with it. Don’t put the cover on immediately after using chemicals.
  4. Tighten and Secure the Cover: Ensure the cover is securely fastened to prevent wind from lifting it and causing tears. Make sure the water bags, anchors, or other securing devices are in place and are holding the cover tightly.
  5. Check for Tension and Slack: Inspect the cover for areas where it may sag. Adjust the tension if necessary to ensure there are no areas where water or debris can accumulate, which can stress the cover. The cover should go down the wall and rest on the pool’s water level. Some water should be added to the cover to hold it down.
  6. Use a Leaf Net: Place a leaf net over the winter cover at the start of the season. This makes it easier to remove leaves and large debris later on without disturbing the main cover.
  7. Check Regularly: Regularly inspect the cover during winter, especially after storms, to ensure it remains tightly secured and undamaged. If you notice small tears or holes in the cover, repair them immediately with a cover repair patch to prevent the damage from worsening.
  8. Avoid Heavy Snow Loads: If you live in an area with heavy snowfall, gently remove snow from the cover with a broom or other soft tools.

Removal & Storage

  1. Use a Cover Pump: Invest in a pool cover pump to remove water that collects on top of the cover during winter. Standing water can weaken the material over time.
  2. Thoroughly Rinse the Cover: After removing the cover, clean it with a soft brush or sponge and a mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly with water.
  3. Dry the Cover: Dry the cover out completely to prevent mold and mildew.
  4. Fold and Store: Fold the cover neatly and store it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Avoid areas that might get damp, as moisture can lead to mold or mildew formation. Storing the cover in a weather-resistant bag or container can protect it from dust, pests, and damage while not in use.
